There are some that say self-care is far more than bubble baths and candles and while we here at Taylor Benfield agree with those sentiments, we do think they’re a pretty good place to start.
Feel the light wash over you
What could be better than de-stressing and unwinding with the warmth and comfort that a burning candle gives? A mesmerising and gently flickering flame helps soothe and its soft glow offers an instant calming effect. The warm enveloping ambience of a candle is used in many spiritual ceremonies to help reduce stress and increase self-awareness.
Give in to the power of scent
With a scented candle, one of our favourite things is to really let yourself enjoy the simple pleasure of its fragrance… trying to pick out the different notes within the scent. Engaging in an enjoyable and relaxing activity is one of the best ways to cope with stress as it helps distract the mind, allowing time to re-set and re-focus. Certain scents help us relax and wind down, certain scents make us feel nostalgic, reminding us of candlelit dinners and holidays by the sea, while other scents can help reinvigorate.
Self-care made simple
In our ‘always on’ world, it’s good to make time for you – even for just an hour a week. We know there are no hard and fast rules; we’re all unique and have different needs. And sometimes self-care might be something you don’t really want to have to do, it’s not just about relaxation and pampering. And that’s the most important thing… recognising what your body needs and when it needs it.
We like some of these self-care suggestions:
- Read a book
- Take a ‘mental health day’ off work
- Watch a film snuggling in a cosy blanket
- Taking time out from technology
- Savour your favourite drink
- Go for a power walk or a run
- Write a postcard to an old friend
- Buy yourself (and your mum!) a bunch of flowers
- Lying on the grass and staring up at the sky
- Run a bath and light a Taylor Benfield candle (of course this one was was going to feature!)
